Backpackers Guide to London
There are loads of things to do in London for broke backpackers. To start, just put on some comfy shoes and walk around! London is so compact, scenic and exciting that you’ll see the most incredible sights without setting foot on the underground – and if you’re looking for a hostel London has plenty to offer.
Enjoy the scenery
As you walk, make sure you look up and admire the city’s architecture. Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus are all free and you’ll get some cool photos to boot.
While you’re in central check out the free National Portrait Gallery and National Gallery – they only charge for certain exhibitions.
Other art galleries including the Serpentine, the Whitechapel Art Gallery and the Tate Britain are also free. The British Museum, the Museum of London and the Victoria & Albert Museum won’t charge you a penny to go in and look around.
Seasonal freedom
If the sun’s out visit Borough Market, Greenwich Market or Camden Market and pick up some bargain treats. Then make like a Londoner and head to the greenery of Primrose Hill, Hampstead Heath or Clapham Common. The locals will be out with picnics and badminton rackets to frolic in the rays.
In the winter wrap up warm and enjoy the many events around the city. The lights of Oxford Street are cool, as is the free Winter Wonderland event in Hyde Park. You can meet Santa and sip mulled wine in the Bavarian bars.
Lots of London cinemas have tight Tuesdays, when tickets are sold at a discount. Or you could get free tickets to be in the audience of a TV show, just apply on the BBC website.
Events
There are always free events in London. If you’re visiting in April go along to the London Marathon sidelines and cheer on the runners. The last weekend in August is the Notting Hill Carnival when the roads are closed for a huge street party, live music and parades.
Evening entertainment
Most nightclubs will have a time tariff, where they will let you in for a discounted rate or even free before a certain hour. Check out the website of the club you want to go to beforehand too, they may have some discount offers on entry and drinks if you give your email address.
Bed time
Equity Point in Paddington is just 5 minutes away from Hyde Park and Notting Hill and well connected to Heathrow Airport. The Georgian building has 68 en-suite rooms suitable for 2-8 people, and everyone gets a free breakfast. Dorms start at €16.98 and privates at €33.96.
Or try the award-winning Generator Hostel in Russell Square. This party hostel has over 800 beds in 1-8 person rooms and a bar that’s open until 2am. There’s a free all-you-can-eat continental breakfast and a free London walking tour. Dorms start at €20.38 and privates at €23.21.
Couples coming to London should opt for a private double room in a hostel or try one of the many cheap hotels around the city.
